Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7, describing it as the cheapest, fastest and most capable small model it has released. It is aimed at high-volume, speed-sensitive work such as classification, extraction, routing, live customer support and browser use.

Price and limits

In the API, Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. For longer prompts the whole request costs $0.50 and $2.50. It has a 1-million-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens. The Batch API is half price.

What is new

It is the first Haiku model with an adjustable effort setting, from low to max, so developers can trade speed for more careful answers. Anthropic notes that Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 remain the better choice for complex agentic coding.

Where to use it

Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users can select Haiku 5.5 on Claude.ai, on the web, iOS and Android. In the API its model ID is claude-haiku-5-5, and it is also on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. Claude Code switched its default Haiku model to 5.5 the same day.

Why it matters

Haiku 5.5 makes Anthropic's lineup cheaper at the bottom end: for tasks where speed and price matter more than depth, it is now one of the least expensive capable models available.
