Ideogram

Ideogram is an AI image generator that has built its reputation on one hard problem most rivals still struggle with: putting legible, correctly spelled text into a picture. That makes it a go-to tool for logos, posters, mockups, social graphics and anything where words matter as much as the visuals.

According to the company's own documentation, Ideogram 4.5 is now the newest model, though its release date has not been published. It follows Ideogram 4.0, the company's first open-weight foundation model, a 9.3B-parameter release published on Hugging Face on June 3, 2026 under a non-commercial license that requires gated access and prohibits commercial use. Ideogram 4.0 itself succeeded Ideogram 3.0 from March 2025.

Ideogram 4.5 adds support for up to five reference images, which helps keep style and editing consistent across generations; Ideogram 4.0 does not support reference images or in-image editing. Native transparency is offered as a separate model in each version. Both models work with structured JSON prompting for tighter typography and layout control at 2K-class resolutions, and API access is available for batch and programmatic work.

Pricing is freemium. The free tier gives 30 credits per week, but only to accounts signed in with Google, Apple or Microsoft; generations are public. Plus costs $20 per month billed monthly, or $15 per month if billed annually ($180/yr), with 2,400 priority credits and private generation. Pro costs $60 per month billed monthly, or $42 per month billed annually ($504/yr), with 7,500 credits, batch generation and quality export. Team costs $30 per user per month billed monthly, or $20 per user per month billed annually, with a two-user minimum and 3,600 credits per user. Enterprise is custom and post-paid with volume API discounts. A legacy Basic plan ($8 per month billed monthly, or $7 per month billed annually, 960 credits) still appears in the billing documentation but is no longer shown on the main pricing page.

The limitations are worth knowing. The free tier only works with specific sign-in providers and keeps your images public. Ideogram 4.0's open-weight license blocks commercial use, so businesses need a paid plan or 4.5 instead. API pricing was not published at the time of review, so volume costs are hard to estimate in advance. Private images require at least the Plus tier.

Choose Ideogram if your work centers on typography-heavy visuals, or if you want to experiment with an open-weight model for non-commercial research. If you mainly need photorealistic scenes with no text, a different generator may serve you better.
