About Windsurf

Devin Desktop is an AI-native code editor that grew out of Codeium and Windsurf. It combines an autocomplete engine (Tab), inline edits, and an autonomous coding agent inside a familiar VS Code-style workspace.

The product changed a lot in 2026. Cognition acquired Codeium/Windsurf for roughly $250M and rebranded the IDE to Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026. Both windsurf.com and codeium.com now redirect to devin.ai. The original Cascade agent reached end-of-life on July 1, 2026 and was replaced by Devin Local as the default agent, and new users start in agent mode by default.

On the model side, SWE-1.6 is the current free proprietary model. Paid tiers also open up access to OpenAI, Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini models, plus Devin cloud agents and Devin Review, which handle longer background tasks and automated code review.

Pricing was reworked on March 19, 2026: the old credit system was retired in favor of daily and weekly quotas. Free is $0/mo with a light quota, unlimited Tab completions and inline edits, and limited model access. Pro is $20/mo (up from $15) with full model access, free SWE-1.6 and cloud agents. A new Max tier is $200/mo with much higher quotas. Teams costs $80/mo base plus $40/mo per developer seat, and Enterprise is custom. Annual billing saves roughly 17-20%, and students get about 50% off Pro.

The main caveats are churn and lock-in: the rapid rebrand, the retirement of Cascade, and the shift to quotas mean workflows and limits have moved more than once in a single year. Heavy agent use can burn through quotas quickly, and much of the value now sits behind the Devin ecosystem.

It suits developers who want an agent-first editor with strong autocomplete and are comfortable inside the Cognition/Devin ecosystem. Anyone tied to older Windsurf/Cascade branding or the credit model should be aware those are gone.

Advantages
  • Fast, high-quality Tab autocomplete and inline edits that stay unlimited even on the free plan
  • Agent-first workflow with Devin Local plus cloud agents and Devin Review on paid tiers
  • Pro gives access to multiple frontier models (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini) alongside the free SWE-1.6
  • Familiar VS Code-style interface that is easy to adopt for existing developers
  • Free tier is genuinely usable for light, everyday coding
Disadvantages
  • Heavy rebranding and churn: Windsurf is now Devin Desktop and Cascade was retired on July 1, 2026
  • The March 2026 switch from credits to daily/weekly quotas can throttle intensive agent sessions
  • Pro price rose from $15 to $20, and the most capable quotas sit behind the $200/mo Max tier
  • Old links (windsurf.com, codeium.com) and the Codeium/Windsurf branding are legacy and just redirect to devin.ai
  • Growing dependence on the Devin ecosystem increases vendor lock-in

Choose Windsurf if…

  • You want an agent-first editor and are fine living inside the Cognition/Devin ecosystem
  • You rely heavily on autocomplete and inline edits and want them unlimited for free
  • You need access to Claude, OpenAI and Gemini models from one paid plan
  • You want cloud agents and automated code review bundled starting at Pro
  • You are a student or annual subscriber looking to cut the Pro cost

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Windsurf?
Windsurf is an AI-powered IDE by Codeium, built as a fork of VS Code. Its flagship feature is Cascade, an AI agent that can plan and execute complex coding tasks with awareness of your entire codebase. It's positioned as a direct competitor to Cursor.
Is Windsurf free?
Windsurf has a free plan with limited AI requests. Pro is $15/month for more AI usage. The free plan is more generous than Cursor's free tier, making it attractive for developers evaluating AI IDEs.
Is Windsurf better than Cursor?
Both are strong AI IDEs and the gap between them is narrowing. Cursor has more features, a larger community, and more model options. Windsurf's Cascade agent and generous free plan are advantages. Many developers try both — the best choice often comes down to personal workflow preference.
What is Cascade in Windsurf?
Cascade is Windsurf's AI agent feature — it can understand your full codebase context, plan multi-step coding tasks, and execute changes across multiple files. Similar to Cursor's Composer, it allows for autonomous coding sessions where the AI makes coordinated changes across a project.
