At the Google Android Show 2026, Google announced Gemini Intelligence — a new AI layer for Android that automates multi-step tasks directly on the device. The feature is coming to Samsung and Google Pixel phones in summer 2026.

What Gemini Intelligence does

Gemini Intelligence operates as an on-device agent capable of executing multi-step tasks that previously required manual navigation across multiple apps. Demonstrated use cases include shopping (finding a product, comparing prices, placing an order), bookings (checking availability, selecting options, confirming reservations), and calendar management (scheduling meetings, sending invites, checking conflicts). The agent understands the task from a natural language instruction and handles the application navigation autonomously.

Googlebooks: Android-powered laptops

Google also announced Googlebooks — a new category of Android-powered laptops from Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo with Gemini built in. Googlebooks run Android natively rather than Chrome OS, bringing the Android app ecosystem and Gemini Intelligence to laptop form factors. The devices are positioned as an alternative to Chromebooks for users who want full Android compatibility with AI-first hardware.

Why it matters

Gemini Intelligence represents Google's answer to Apple Intelligence on iOS — a system-level AI agent integrated into the mobile OS rather than a standalone app. The differentiation from Apple's approach is the emphasis on multi-step task automation across third-party apps. For Android users, this means complex workflows that currently require switching between multiple apps can be triggered with a single instruction. The summer 2026 rollout on Samsung and Pixel devices covers two of the highest-volume Android manufacturers.
