OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26. It is the new version of the company's fast, lower-cost model line and replaces GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenAI positions it for the tasks that fill a workday: filling out forms, reading technical drawings, drafting proposals and operating desktop apps on the user's behalf. For the hardest coding work, OpenAI itself says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice.
Price and availability
In ChatGPT: Terra is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, and OpenAI's release notes say it is rolling out to Business workspaces as well. It is not offered in regular Chat.
In the API: the model ID is gpt-6.1-terra. Standard pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI says that is 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Plan limits: according to OpenAI, the same Work and Codex allowance covers more tasks with Terra than with GPT-5.6 Terra, and substantially more than with Sol or Astra.
What OpenAI claims about performance
These figures come from OpenAI's own announcement and have not been independently checked:
Computer use: on Agents' Last Exam, a benchmark of professional tasks, Terra at medium reasoning effort scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about a third of the cost, and OpenAI says it completes tasks over three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Coding: at maximum effort it solves 50.3% of Terminal-Bench 4.0 tasks, against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra.
Factual errors: on OpenAI's internal set of error-inducing prompts, the error rate at low effort fell from 53.6% to 16.7%.
OpenAI also rates Terra as meeting the Critical threshold for cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework and says it keeps the safeguards built for GPT-6 Astra.
Who it matters to
Terra is aimed at high-volume, repetitive work where the price per task matters more than peak intelligence. OpenAI's own example is reading incoming invoices and typing their details into accounting software.
What this means if you use ChatGPT or Codex
If you hit your plan limits in ChatGPT Work or Codex, switch routine tasks to Terra in the model list and keep Sol or Astra for the hard ones. Your allowance should last longer.
If you build automations on the API, Terra is worth testing against your current model on your own tasks before you switch: benchmark scores and real form-filling or browser work do not always match.
