ChatGPT is OpenAI's flagship chat assistant for writing, coding, research, analysis and multimodal tasks. It works in the browser, in desktop and mobile apps, and through the API.

As of October 2026, ChatGPT runs GPT-6 with a new Intelligent UI, which rolled out on October 7, 2026 to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and October 8 to Free and Go. Paid plans use GPT-6 Sol in the main chat, while Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's most capable model. GPT-6.1 Sol, released September 29, 2026 at OpenAI's DevDay, is available only in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, not in the main chat interface. GPT-5.5 was retired from ChatGPT, Work and Codex on October 14, 2026.

Capabilities span long-form and technical writing, code generation and debugging, document and image analysis, voice conversations, web browsing, data analysis and image generation. The Intelligent UI lets answers include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, maps and small interactive tools such as calculators and games built on the spot. An always-on agent feature called Dots, with its own cloud computer and browser, is available on Pro for users over 18 outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, as well as on Business Premium and Enterprise.

Pricing is tiered. Free costs $0/mo and runs GPT-6 Luna. Go costs $8/mo and Plus costs $20/mo. Pro is offered in three monthly tiers at $100, $200 and $500 per month, with the $500 tier adding Ultrafast mode for Codex and Work. Business costs $25 per user per month, or $20 per user per month billed annually. Enterprise and Edu pricing is available on request, and API usage is billed per 1 million tokens, varying by model.

Limitations remain: the newest model, GPT-6.1 Sol, is not yet available in the main chat interface, only through Work and Codex. GPT-5.5's retirement removes an option some users relied on. The assistant can still produce confident but incorrect answers, and Dots is restricted by age, region and plan.

ChatGPT suits anyone who wants a general-purpose AI assistant, from individual users on the free plan to professionals and teams who need higher usage quotas, advanced reasoning or business and enterprise features.
