ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI's flagship chat assistant for writing, coding, research, analysis and multimodal tasks. It works in the browser, in desktop and mobile apps, and through the API, and it has become one of the most widely used consumer AI products in the world.

As of July 2026 the default model is GPT-5.5, offered in Instant and Thinking modes, with a Pro variant on higher tiers. GPT-5.5 launched around April 2026 and replaced the older GPT-5 lineup; the model picker was simplified to Instant, Thinking and Pro. The GPT-4o era is over, and GPT-4o is no longer the flagship. A newer GPT-5.6 family (Sol flagship, Terra balanced, Luna fast) has entered limited preview but is not yet generally available.

Capabilities cover long-form and technical writing, code generation and debugging, document and image analysis, voice conversations, web browsing, data analysis, and image generation, all built on the current multimodal GPT-5.x stack rather than the older GPT-4o pipeline. Higher tiers add larger context windows and Sora video generation.

Pricing is tiered. Free is $0/mo and now shows ads to logged-in adult users in the US (since February 2026), with the default GPT-5.5 model at limited usage. The new Go tier is $8/mo and has rolled out worldwide. Plus is $20/mo. Pro is now split into two options: $100/mo with roughly 5x Plus quotas, and $200/mo with about 20x quotas plus Sora video and a 1M-token context window. Business (Team) is $25/user/mo with a two-seat minimum, and Enterprise is custom-priced.

Limitations remain real. The model can still produce confident but wrong answers, free usage is capped and now ad-supported in the US, and the most useful capabilities (long context, video, heavy quotas) sit behind the pricier tiers. GPT-5.6 is preview-only, so you cannot rely on it for production yet.

ChatGPT suits almost anyone who wants a general-purpose AI assistant, from casual users on the free or Go tier to professionals and teams who need higher quotas, larger context and collaboration features.
