About Claude

Claude is a conversational AI assistant from Anthropic, used through the web app, mobile apps, and the API. It handles long-form writing, analysis, coding, document reading, and multi-step reasoning, with an emphasis on careful, steerable responses.

The lineup has moved well past the earlier Claude 3 / Sonnet era. The most capable widely released model is now Claude Fable 5, generally available since June 9, 2026. The current family also includes Claude Opus 4.8 for complex agentic coding and enterprise work, Claude Sonnet 5 (released June 30, 2026), and the lighter Claude Haiku 4.5. A separate Claude Mythos 5 exists but is invitation-only through Project Glasswing.

The biggest practical change is context: current models offer a 1M-token context window rather than the older 200K, so you can load large codebases, long documents, or entire transcripts in a single conversation. The models also cover multimodal input and tool use across the product.

Pricing is tiered. The Free plan is $0. Pro is $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200/year). Max ranges from $100/month (5x usage) up to $200/month (20x usage). Team offers a Standard seat at $25/month ($20 annual) and a Premium seat at $125/month ($100 annual), with a five-seat minimum. Enterprise is custom, starting around $20/seat plus usage. API list pricing per million tokens is $10/$50 for Fable 5, $5/$25 for Opus 4.8, $3/$15 for Sonnet 5 (with a $2/$10 intro rate through Aug 31, 2026), and $1/$5 for Haiku 4.5.

Limitations are worth noting. Free and even paid plans have usage caps that reset on a rolling basis, so heavy users can hit limits mid-session. The most capable models are the most expensive on the API, and the top-end Mythos 5 is not openly available. As with any LLM, outputs still need checking for factual accuracy.

Claude suits writers, developers, analysts, and teams who want strong reasoning, large-context handling, and a choice of models to balance cost against capability.

Advantages
  • Current models offer a 1M-token context window, enough for large codebases and long documents
  • Clear model tiering (Fable 5, Opus 4.8, Sonnet 5, Haiku 4.5) lets you trade cost for capability
  • Strong at long-form writing, analysis, and agentic coding
  • Free tier plus a generous range of paid and API options
  • Consistent quality across web, mobile, and API access
Disadvantages
  • Usage caps apply even on paid plans and can interrupt heavy sessions
  • The most capable models carry the highest API cost ($10/$50 per MTok for Fable 5)
  • Top-end Claude Mythos 5 is invitation-only and not generally available
  • Outputs still require fact-checking like any LLM
  • Team plan requires a five-seat minimum, raising the entry cost for small groups

Choose Claude if…

  • You need to work with very large documents or codebases in one context
  • You want to pick a model that balances price against capability
  • You do long-form writing, analysis, or agentic coding
  • You want to start free and scale to Pro, Max, Team, or API access

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the task. Claude generally produces better long-form writing and handles very long documents more accurately. ChatGPT has more features (image generation, voice, plugins) and a larger app ecosystem. On coding benchmarks, they are competitive — Claude 3.7 leads on many.
Which is free — ChatGPT or Claude?
Both have free plans. ChatGPT Free uses GPT-4o mini with limited GPT-4o access. Claude Free uses Claude 3.5 Haiku with limited Claude 3.5 Sonnet access. Both paid plans ($20/month) unlock the best models with higher usage limits.
Can ChatGPT generate images?
Yes. ChatGPT Plus and higher plans include DALL-E 3 image generation. Claude does not generate images — it's text and code only.
Which AI is better for coding — ChatGPT or Claude?
Both are excellent. Claude 3.7 Sonnet with extended thinking performs best on SWE-bench (real-world software engineering tasks) as of 2025. Claude Code (the agentic CLI) is specifically built for complex coding workflows. ChatGPT with code interpreter excels at data analysis and running code.
