DALL-E 3

DALL·E 3 is OpenAI's text-to-image model, built directly into ChatGPT Plus and available via the OpenAI API. Its defining strength is prompt adherence: DALL·E 3 follows detailed, multi-sentence prompts more accurately than most other models, correctly incorporating specific details about composition, style, colors, and objects that other generators often ignore or misinterpret.

For ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month), DALL·E 3 is accessible directly in the chat interface — describe an image, and ChatGPT generates it. This integration makes image creation frictionless for users already using ChatGPT for other tasks. The ChatGPT wrapper also helps with prompt engineering: ChatGPT can take a simple description and automatically expand it into a detailed prompt optimized for DALL·E 3's strengths.

The main limitations are content restrictions and stylistic range. DALL·E 3's safety filters are significantly more restrictive than Midjourney or Stable Diffusion — requests for any content involving real people, violence, or mature themes are often declined. The aesthetic output, while clean and accurate, lacks the artistic depth and stylistic diversity of Midjourney. DALL·E 3 is the right choice for users who need accurate, commercially safe illustrations and graphics without learning prompt engineering for a separate tool.

DALL·E 3 will be retired on May 12, 2026, alongside DALL·E 2. Its successor — ChatGPT Images 2.0 (model ID gpt-image-2) — launched April 21, 2026 and is now the default image model in ChatGPT. New projects should use ChatGPT Images 2.0 directly.
