Duolingo Max is the premium subscription tier that sits above the free plan and the mid-level Super plan. It keeps everything Duolingo is known for — gamified lessons, streaks, and bite-sized practice — and layers AI conversation tools on top for learners who want to actually speak the language.
The AI features launched on OpenAI's GPT-4 in 2023; Duolingo has not publicly disclosed which OpenAI model currently powers the feature. The marquee capability is Video Call: a live spoken conversation with an animated character named Lily who remembers details across sessions. Video Call is currently available for Japanese, Korean and Chinese, while Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese learners get both Video Call and Roleplay. As of January 2026, Explain My Answer is no longer a Max exclusive — it is free for all Duolingo learners across several supported languages — so Max's paid edge now rests mainly on Video Call and Roleplay.
Key capabilities include real-time spoken practice with Lily, Roleplay scenarios (ordering food, booking a hotel) where the AI plays a conversation partner, and the usual full Duolingo course library with no ads.
Duolingo offers four tiers: a free plan, Super, Max, and a Super Family plan covering multiple people. Exact prices are only shown in-app or vary by region and could not be verified from Duolingo's public pages at the time of this review.
Limitations are worth weighing. With Explain My Answer now free, the differentiation Max offers is narrower than it once was. Video Call availability still depends on your target language, and the AI conversations, while useful, are scripted enough that they don't replace a human tutor for nuance.
Max makes sense if you're already committed to Duolingo, want spoken conversation practice, and are learning a language where Video Call is supported. Casual learners are usually fine on the free tier or Super.
