Duolingo Max is the premium subscription tier that sits above the free plan and the mid-level Super plan. It keeps everything Duolingo is known for — gamified lessons, streaks, and bite-sized practice — and layers AI conversation tools on top for learners who want to actually speak the language.
The AI features originally launched on GPT-4 in 2023 but are now reported to run on OpenAI's GPT-4o. The current marquee feature is Video Call: a live spoken conversation with an animated character named Lily who remembers details across sessions. It has expanded to more languages, including Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Note that in January 2026, 'Explain My Answer' stopped being a Max exclusive and became free for everyone, so Max's paid edge now rests mainly on Video Call and Roleplay.
Key capabilities include real-time spoken practice with Lily, Roleplay scenarios (ordering food, booking a hotel) where the AI plays a conversation partner, and the usual full Duolingo course library with no ads.
Pricing is tiered: the free plan is $0, Super is $95.99/year, and Duolingo Max is $167.99/year or $29.99/month. There is also a Super Family plan from $119.99/year covering up to six people, though that is Super rather than Max.
Limitations are worth weighing. Max costs almost double Super, and with 'Explain My Answer' now free, the differentiation is narrower than it once was. Video Call availability still depends on your target language, and the AI conversations, while useful, are scripted enough that they don't replace a human tutor for nuance.
Max makes sense if you're already committed to Duolingo, want spoken conversation practice, and are learning a language where Video Call is supported. Casual learners are usually fine on the free tier or Super.
