Google Veo is Google's generative video model. You describe a scene in text or feed it a still image, and it produces short cinematic clips, now with matching audio baked in rather than added afterwards.
The current version is Veo 3.1, which replaced Veo 3 around the end of March 2026. The update added a cheaper Veo 3.1 Lite tier alongside the Fast and Standard variants, and improved the synchronized audio so clips can include spoken dialogue with lip-sync, sound effects and ambient background. In April 2026 Google made Veo 3.1 free for every personal Google account through Flow and Vids, which is the single biggest change for casual users.
On capability, Veo 3.1 handles both text-to-video and image-to-video, produces clips up to 8 seconds, and generates audio in the same pass. It is available inside Google Flow (the dedicated video tool) and Google Vids, and through the Vertex AI and Gemini APIs for developers.
Pricing has a genuine free path: any personal Google account gets Veo 3.1 in Flow (roughly 50 daily AI credits, about 12 clips a day) and in Vids (around 10 clips a month), capped at 8-second clips. Paid subscriptions run about $7.99/mo for Google AI Plus, $19.99/mo for AI Pro and $249.99/mo for AI Ultra. On the API, Veo 3.1 Fast is about $0.15 per second and Standard about $0.40 per second, audio included.
The main limitations are the short 8-second clip length, daily and monthly caps on the free tier, and the fact that top quality and volume still sit behind paid plans. Output quality and prompt adherence also vary from generation to generation.
