Google is extending Chrome's autofill beyond names, addresses and card numbers. In a post on October 28, Chrome product manager Amanda Lim wrote that enhanced autofill can now suggest information pulled directly from Gmail while you fill out online forms, such as order numbers, tracking information and flight bookings. It uses Gemini with Personal Intelligence, the feature that lets Gemini draw on your own Google apps. According to 9to5Google, these suggestions appear in the usual autofill dropdown under the label "Suggested by Gemini".
Who gets it
The feature is beginning to roll out in the US on desktop, Android and iOS. It is only for Gemini in Chrome users who have Personal Intelligence turned on. Google's Gemini help page sets the conditions for Personal Intelligence: you must be 18 or older, signed in with a personal Google Account (not a work, school or supervised one), and have Keep Activity turned on. Personal Intelligence is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria.
Privacy and controls
Google says sensitive data is encrypted and that you stay in control: in Chrome settings you choose whether enhanced autofill is on and what it can access. 9to5Google adds that you can remove individual suggestions. To stop Gemini reading your email at all, you can disconnect Google Workspace, which covers Gmail, under Personal Intelligence and then Connected Apps in the Gemini app.
One detail is worth knowing. Google's Chrome Enterprise help page for the enhanced autofill policy says the feature can use page content, the page URL and your interactions with suggestions. For personal accounts, the default setting allows the feature and the use of this data to improve Google's AI models, and in that mode the data can be read by human reviewers. Browsers managed through Chrome Enterprise cloud management, and those in Workspace for Education, default to not improving the models.
What this means if you use Gemini in Chrome
If you shop and travel online a lot, this saves searching your inbox for a booking reference or order number when you fill in a return form or a check-in page. Check each suggestion before you submit: an older order or booking can look like the one you need.
If you would rather keep your email and your browsing apart, leave Personal Intelligence off, or turn off enhanced autofill in Chrome settings. Chrome's standard autofill, which uses the data you have saved in the browser, does not need Gemini.
