Grok

Grok is the chat assistant built by xAI. It lives both inside X (formerly Twitter) and as a standalone product at grok.com, and it is known for a looser, more opinionated conversational style than most rivals, plus tight access to real-time posts on X. xAI's documentation and news pages also carry the 'SpaceXAI' label alongside the Grok branding.

The current flagship, announced September 21, 2026, is Grok 4.7, which xAI describes as 'the most capable model we've built.' It carries a 500k-token context window and a May 2026 knowledge cutoff, and is available through the xAI API as model grok-4.7. Earlier API models grok-4.6 and grok-4.5 remain available with the same 500k context window. xAI has also launched Grok Build, a dedicated coding model (grok-build-0.1) with a 256k-token context window, and Grok Bot, described as AI teammates now bundled into The X Subscription alongside Cursor.

On capabilities, Grok handles text chat, image and video understanding, web and X search, and image/video generation through Grok Imagine. Developers can reach the chat and coding models through the xAI API, and Grok 4.7 is also offered through Cursor and through intermediaries such as OpenRouter, Vercel, and Cloudflare.

As of October 12, 2026, xAI (under the SpaceXSI banner) folded Grok's consumer access into The X Subscription, a single bundle that also includes X Premium and the Cursor coding tool; Grok and Cursor share one weekly usage pool across the bundle. The X Subscription has five tiers: Free, Plus at $8 per month, Premium at $30 per month, Super at $100 per month, and Ultra at $200 per month. For developers, the xAI API still prices grok-4.7 separately at $2.00 per million input tokens, $0.50 per million cached input tokens, and $6.00 per million output tokens for prompts under 200k tokens, rising to $4.00 / $1.00 / $12.00 above 200k tokens; a faster variant costs up to twice as much. The older grok-4.3 model is cheaper, at $1.25 input / $2.50 output per million tokens under 200k tokens, with a 1M-token context window.

The main limitation now is that Grok is no longer available as its own standalone subscription for new buyers: it comes bundled with Cursor and X Premium inside The X Subscription, and Grok's usage shares a weekly cap with Cursor's. The model lineup also iterates quickly, with 4.5, 4.6, and 4.7 all shipping within a few months of each other, so capabilities and pricing can change fast.

Grok suits developers who want API or Cursor access to xAI's models, people already active on X who want an assistant wired into live posts, and anyone who prefers a more candid, less filtered conversational style. Buyers who want Grok chat or Grok Build specifically, rather than the full X Subscription bundle, should check xAI's own pages to confirm current bundle terms before committing.
