Meta AI is the conversational assistant that Meta ships across its apps rather than as a standalone product. You reach it inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads, and through Meta's AI glasses, so it sits wherever people already chat and browse.
The underlying model changed in 2026. Meta AI now runs on Muse Spark, Meta Superintelligence Labs' own proprietary model family, replacing the earlier Llama-based engine; Meta updated the model again on July 24, 2026. In September 2026 Meta also launched Muse, a separate personal AI agent app powered by the same Muse Spark family, available at muse.ai and through WhatsApp with a US rollout. Meta's newest models, Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, launched in October 2026 but are currently available only to developers through the Meta Model API and Muse Code subscriptions; Meta says Wonder will reach the Muse app for subscribers first, and it does not yet power Meta AI.
Day to day, the assistant answers questions, drafts and rewrites text, summarizes threads, and helps in group chats, acting on the context you are already looking at instead of forcing you into a separate window.
Meta AI chat itself is free to use inside Meta's apps. On September 15, 2026, Meta launched Meta One, a subscription system that adds more compute-heavy image and video generation. It includes individual bundles, Core at $7.99 per month and Premium at $19.99 per month, plus single-app plans: Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus at $3.99 per month each, and WhatsApp Plus at $2.99 per month. The separate Muse personal agent app has its own free tier, with paid Power ($20/mo) and Maximum ($100/mo) plans for heavier use.
The main limitations are the ones that come with a closed, platform-bound assistant: the shift to proprietary Muse Spark ended the open-weight approach many developers relied on, the tier structure now spans several similarly named add-on plans, Meta's most capable new models are developer-only for now, and Meta AI is tied to Meta's ecosystem rather than being a standalone tool you can host yourself.
It is a natural fit if you already live in WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger and want an assistant right there, and are fine with a proprietary model and Meta's data practices. If you specifically want open weights or a standalone workspace, look elsewhere.
