About Meta AI

Meta AI is the conversational assistant that Meta ships across its apps rather than as a standalone product. You reach it inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads, and through Meta's AI glasses, so it sits wherever people already chat and browse.

The underlying model changed significantly in 2026. Meta AI no longer runs on Llama 4; since the April 8, 2026 announcement it is powered by Muse Spark, the first proprietary large language model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. This was a notable and controversial move away from Meta's open-weight Llama lineage. In July 2026 Meta added Muse Image, its first in-house image-generation model, to Meta AI.

Day to day, the assistant answers questions, drafts and rewrites text, summarizes threads, helps in group chats, and now generates images through Muse Image. Because it lives inside the apps, it can act on the context you are already looking at instead of forcing you into a separate window.

Pricing changed too. A free tier remains for casual use, but in May/June 2026 Meta introduced paid subscriptions under the Meta One brand, ending Meta AI's fully-free status. Consumer plans are Meta One Plus at $7.99/month and Meta One Premium at $19.99/month; business plans are Meta One Essential at $14.99/month and Meta One Advanced at $49.99/month. Paid testing began in June 2026 in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia and is expanding globally.

The main limitations are the ones that come with a closed, platform-bound assistant: the shift to the proprietary Muse Spark ended the open-weight approach many developers relied on, availability of paid tiers is still rolling out by country, and Meta AI is tied to Meta's ecosystem rather than being a standalone tool you can host yourself.

It is a natural fit if you already live in WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger and want an assistant right there, and are fine with a proprietary model and Meta's data practices. If you specifically want open weights or a standalone workspace, look elsewhere.

Advantages
  • Built directly into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads, so there is nothing extra to install
  • Runs on Muse Spark, Meta's newest proprietary model, with Muse Image added for in-app image generation
  • Still offers a usable free tier for casual questions and chats
  • Works across phones and Meta's AI glasses, staying in the context you are already in
  • Clear paid tiers for both consumers (Meta One Plus/Premium) and businesses (Essential/Advanced)
Disadvantages
  • No longer open-weight — the move to proprietary Muse Spark ended the Llama-based, developer-friendly approach
  • Paid Meta One plans mean it is no longer fully free
  • Subscriptions are still rolling out country by country, so paid tiers are not available everywhere yet
  • Locked to Meta's ecosystem; you cannot self-host or use it independently of the apps
  • Ties your usage to Meta's account and data practices

Choose Meta AI if…

  • You already spend your day in WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger
  • You want an assistant that generates images in-app via Muse Image
  • You are comfortable with a proprietary model rather than open weights
  • You want a free option and can upgrade to Meta One later
  • You use Meta's AI glasses and want the assistant there too

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Meta AI?
Meta AI is Meta's AI assistant powered by Llama 4, integrated into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. It can answer questions, generate images, search the web in real-time, and assist with tasks — all without leaving Meta's apps. Available free globally.
Is Meta AI free?
Yes. Meta AI is completely free with no usage limits. It's available to anyone with a WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, or Messenger account. There is no paid tier — Meta funds it through its advertising business.
Is Meta AI as good as ChatGPT?
Meta AI (Llama 4) is competitive with GPT-4 on many benchmarks. For general conversation and everyday questions, the quality difference is minimal. ChatGPT has more features (code interpreter, DALL-E images, voice) and a larger app ecosystem. Meta AI wins on accessibility; ChatGPT wins on features.
Can Meta AI generate images?
Yes. Meta AI can generate images from text prompts using Meta's Emu image model. Quality is decent but generally rated below Midjourney or DALL-E 3. It's convenient for casual use directly within Instagram or WhatsApp.
