Udio is an AI music generation platform that generates full tracks from text prompts specifying genre, mood, tempo, and style. It competes with Suno on audio quality, and many users rate Udio's sonic fidelity and production quality higher than competitors on certain genres, particularly electronic, ambient, and instrumental music.

Following a partnership with Universal Music Group announced in late 2025, Udio disabled downloading of audio, video, and stems for all users, free and paid alike, according to Udio's own help centre. This is a major repositioning: Udio is now effectively a streaming-only walled garden while a new UMG-licensed platform, expected to add artist voices, styles, catalog access, and remixing of real songs, is being built.

Key capabilities include text-to-music generation, style and mood controls, track extension and variation, and inpainting for editing specific sections of generated tracks, all through a browser-based interface. Free-tier users get 32-second songs, extend, remix, styles, and generated cover art. Paid tiers add Voice Control, music and lyric editing, generation from uploaded audio, style reference, custom cover art, and full-length (2:10) songs without the free tier's daily cap.

Pricing: Free costs $0 per month and provides 10 credits per day plus 100 credits per month with no rollovers, up to 4 songs generated simultaneously (2 at once), and a limit of 3 full-length generations per day. Standard is $10 per month billed monthly, or $8 per month if billed annually ($96 per year), and includes 2,400 credits per month. Pro is $30 per month billed monthly, or $24 per month if billed annually ($288 per year), and includes 6,000 credits per month with up to 10 songs generated at once. Credit top-ups are available on any plan at $3 for 100 credits or $25 for 1,000 credits. A student discount is offered but the discounted amount is not published.

The biggest limitation right now is that no plan, free or paid, allows downloading generated tracks, audio, video, or stems, so anything made on Udio currently stays inside the platform. This is tied to the ongoing rebuild of Udio's licensing relationship with the music industry and creates real uncertainty about when export capability will return. Suno has a larger community and more shared training examples at this stage. Udio suits musicians and producers who prioritize audio quality and are comfortable generating and listening within the platform for now, rather than those who need to export finished tracks immediately.
