Whimsical is a visual collaboration platform for creating flowcharts, mind maps, wireframes, sticky notes, and documents, all in an integrated canvas-based interface.
Whimsical AI generates flowcharts, mind maps, and wireframes from text descriptions. A designer can describe a user flow or information architecture in natural language and receive a diagram that can be edited immediately. AI use is metered: every plan starts with a small allowance of AI credits, and additional credits are purchased separately at $0.10 each.
Key capabilities include AI-assisted flowchart, mind map, and wireframe generation, real-time multiplayer collaboration, an infinite canvas, drag-and-drop diagram building, a template library, and shareable links for viewing boards.
Pricing has three tiers. Free is $0 per editor per month and includes unlimited boards, docs, teams, and guests, but caps content at 50 board objects and 50 doc blocks per month, with watermarked exports, 7-day version history, and 10 AI credits. Pro is $10 per editor per month billed annually ($120 per editor per year) or $12 per editor per month billed monthly, and removes the object/block limits while adding 90-day version history and watermark-free exports. Business is $20 per editor per month billed annually ($240 per editor per year) or $24 per editor per month billed monthly, adding SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, private teams, workspace controls, and priority support. Extra AI credits can be bought on any plan in bundles of 250 for $25, 1,000 for $100, or 10,000 for $1,000. Whimsical also offers a 20% non-profit discount and a year of free Pro-level access for educators and students.
Limitations: the free plan's content caps are tighter in practice than the watermark alone, since 50 objects or blocks per month is easy to exceed. AI generation draws down a metered credit balance rather than being unlimited on paid plans, which adds a variable cost on top of the subscription. Whimsical is also more focused on diagrams and flowcharts than full UI design, and its AI wireframe output is less polished than its flowchart and mind map generation.
Best suited for product managers, designers, and teams doing process documentation, user flow mapping, and information architecture work who want AI to speed up initial diagram creation and are comfortable managing a separate AI credit budget.
