OpenAI changed course on its Pro limits on October 29. A month earlier, in a September 29 email, the company had told Pro 200 subscribers that their Work and Codex usage would be reduced. Now it has canceled that cut and raised the allowance on the other plans. The change covers ChatGPT Work and Codex, the two places where long agent tasks burn through limits fastest.
What changed, plan by plan
Pro 100 ($100 a month): twice the previous Work and Codex allowance.
Pro 200 ($200 a month): the planned reduction is canceled. Subscribers who still had the higher allowance keep it; those already moved to the lower one get it doubled to the same level. Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again.
Pro 500 ($500 a month): twice the previous Work and Codex allowance. It remains the only Pro plan with Ultrafast mode for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Business Premium: OpenAI's Business release notes say Work and Codex usage is increasing on this plan too, without giving a figure.
Plus: unchanged.
Prices do not change. Existing subscribers get the new allowance automatically, without waiting for renewal and without canceling and resubscribing.
What stays the same
Weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in regular Chat are separate from the Work and Codex allowance and stay as they were on Pro 100 and Pro 500. On Pro 200, the lower weekly limit now matches the higher one. OpenAI also warns that a doubled allowance does not guarantee twice as many finished tasks: usage still depends on the model, context size, reasoning, tool use and speed mode. Fast mode uses the allowance 2.5 times faster than Standard, and Ultrafast eight times faster.
Who it matters to
The change matters most to developers who run Codex for hours a day, and to anyone who was weighing a move from Pro 200 to Pro 500 or to another vendor after the September announcement.
What this means if you pay for a coding plan
If you are on Pro 200 and were planning to upgrade or leave, check your limits first: you are back on the higher allowance at the same price.
If you are choosing between Pro 100 and a competitor's plan at the same price, note that OpenAI's plan now includes twice the Codex usage it did a week ago. Test your own typical task on both before deciding; see OpenAI Codex vs Claude Code and the ChatGPT card for the full plan list.
