Notion AI

Notion AI is the artificial-intelligence layer inside Notion, the document and database workspace. It lives directly in your pages, so instead of switching to a separate chatbot you summon it where your notes, wikis and project databases already are.

The current release is Notion 3.8, shipped October 13, 2026, under the theme 'Context for your agents'. It lets outside AI agents connect into a workspace through MCP with admin controls, adds a Skills API that syncs Skills written in Notion out to assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude, brings in several new models from vendors including OpenAI and Anthropic, and lets Business and Enterprise workspaces connect a ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan to cover AI usage inside Notion.

The prior 3.7 release (September 2026) had added an agent Skills system with a skills library, the ability to export Skills to external tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini and Grok, Custom Agents that can call sub-agents, a Notion Agents iOS app, and a redesigned model picker letting workspace owners choose which models are available to the built-in Notion Agent versus Custom Agents. The 3.6 release before that (July 2026) introduced orchestration of External Agents such as Claude and Cursor from shared boards, AI-generated interactive HTML blocks, reading and writing Microsoft Office files (PPTX, XLSX, DOCX) and Outlook, AI Meeting Notes with speaker identification, Enterprise Search across connected apps, and a Research Mode.

Day to day the AI can draft and rewrite text, translate, summarize long pages, fill and query databases, answer questions across your whole workspace, and run multi-step agent tasks. Custom Agents you build yourself are billed on a credit system, free to try and then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits, and their activity can be tracked through audit logging on higher plans.

Pricing has four tiers. Free is $0 per member per month but only includes a capped trial of Notion AI, not ongoing access. Plus is $10 per seat per month billed annually (about $12 per seat per month if billed monthly) and also only includes the AI trial. Business is $20 per seat per month billed annually (about $24 per seat per month if billed monthly) and is the cheapest plan with full, ongoing AI, including the Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search. Enterprise is custom-priced and adds zero data retention with LLM providers. Notion AI is not sold as a separate add-on; it is bundled into the Business and Enterprise seat price, with Custom Agent credits as an extra variable cost, and Business and Enterprise users can now also connect a ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan to help pay for usage.

The main catch is that ongoing AI access sits behind the Business plan. Free and Plus users only get a capped AI trial, so casual users who expect free or cheap AI on their existing workspace will hit a wall quickly. Custom Agent credits are an added, usage-based cost on top of seat pricing, and some higher-end features such as audit logging are reserved for upper tiers.

Notion AI makes most sense for teams already running their knowledge base, docs and projects in Notion who want AI in the same place and are on or willing to move to the Business tier. Solo note-takers on the free or Plus plan will find the AI too limited to rely on day to day.
