About Notion AI

Notion AI is the artificial-intelligence layer inside Notion, the document and database workspace. It lives directly in your pages, so instead of switching to a separate chatbot you summon it where your notes, wikis and project databases already are.

The current release is Notion 3.6, shipped on July 1, 2026. This version pushes the product well past simple text help. It introduces a model picker that lets you choose between Claude Opus 4.8, GPT-5.x, Gemini 3, Grok 4.3, GLM 5.2 or an Auto setting, adds orchestration of External Agents such as Claude and Cursor from shared boards, and lets agents generate interactive HTML blocks. It also reads and writes Microsoft Office files (PPTX, XLSX, DOCX) and Outlook, records AI Meeting Notes with speaker identification, runs Enterprise Search across connected apps, and offers a Research Mode.

Day to day the AI can draft and rewrite text, translate, summarize long pages, fill and query databases, answer questions across your whole workspace, and now run multi-step agent tasks. Custom Agents you build yourself are billed on a credit system at $10 per 1,000 monthly credits, and their activity can be tracked through audit logging.

Pricing has four tiers. Free is $0, Plus is $10 per seat per month billed annually (about $12 month-to-month), Business is $20 per seat per month billed annually (about $24 monthly) and is the cheapest plan with the full AI, and Enterprise is custom-priced. Since May 2025 Notion AI is no longer a separate paid add-on; it is bundled into Business and Enterprise.

The main catch is that the full AI now sits behind the Business plan. Free and Plus users only get a capped AI trial rather than ongoing access, so casual users who expected free AI on their existing workspace will hit a wall quickly. Custom Agent credits are an extra variable cost on top of the seat price.

Notion AI makes most sense for teams already running their knowledge base, docs and projects in Notion who want AI in the same place, and who are on or willing to move to the Business tier. Solo note-takers on the free plan will find the AI too limited to rely on.

Advantages
  • Lives inside the same pages, wikis and databases you already work in, so there is no context switch
  • Model picker lets you pick Claude Opus 4.8, GPT-5.x, Gemini 3, Grok 4.3 or GLM 5.2, plus an Auto option, per task
  • Workspace-wide Enterprise Search, AI Meeting Notes with speaker identification and Research Mode go well beyond basic text tools
  • Reads and writes Microsoft Office files (PPTX, XLSX, DOCX) and Outlook, and can orchestrate external agents like Claude and Cursor
  • No longer a separate add-on: on Business and Enterprise the AI is bundled into the seat price
Disadvantages
  • Full AI requires the Business plan at $20/seat/mo; Free and Plus only get a capped trial, not ongoing access
  • Custom Agents cost extra on a credit system ($10 per 1,000 monthly credits), a variable spend on top of seats
  • The May 2025 shift from add-on to bundled means some users lost the ability to buy AI cheaply on a lower plan
  • Value depends on already living in Notion; the AI is far less useful if your work sits in other tools
  • Enterprise-grade features like audit logging for Custom Agents are gated to higher tiers

Choose Notion AI if…

  • Your team already keeps its docs, wikis and projects in Notion
  • You are on or willing to move to the Business plan ($20/seat/mo) for full AI
  • You want to switch models (Opus 4.8, GPT-5.x, Gemini 3, Grok, GLM) without leaving your notes
  • You need workspace-wide search, meeting notes or research inside one tool
  • You want to build and audit Custom Agents against your own content
